Could you be using the wrong CAD software or do you just need to use the right one better?
By Calum Fischer-Keogh
For many architects, engineers and designers, finding the right CAD software with the functions your business needs, as well as suitable support and training, may not be immediately obvious.
Given the number software package options – Autodesk alone produce over 140 different programmes - it’s understandable that businesses can be confused or swayed to a product by price alone, by what is familiar to the person using it, or from what others say; either good or bad. This can lead to working with applications that don’t support the best workflow, either because the wrong application is being used, or having the right package but without the right knowledge to get the most from it and little or no support.
Many of our clients who had happily used AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT over many years were unaware of the extent of improvements in speed and accuracy they have been able to achieve by using their CAD package better and more efficiently. New functionality and understanding how to best set up your system makes drafting, checking and sharing information much easier and quicker. For those who have made the move to applications like Revit LT and Revit, from sole practitioners to multi-disciplinary businesses, investment in software, training and support is recouped through much faster drafting, fewer mistakes, and higher quality output in both 2D and 3D. It also helps to set a practice apart from competitors and win more work as a result. It’s absolutely true that Revit can supercharge your design, reduce design and drafting time significantly.
Updating existing CAD skills, streamlining your set up or moving from AutoCAD to Revit and having support of course comes with an initial cost financially or in time. This can be recouped many times over however with the benefits from working more efficiently and reducing errors. Moving to Revit has the additional benefit of more powerful processing functions, allowing you to develop sections, elevations and 3D automatically from 2D plans. You maximise the benefits with the right training and support in place.
